ISO 9001:2026 is an evolution, not a revolution<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The release of ISO 9001:2026<\/span><\/span><\/a> is planned for September this year, and with its approach it is already raising many questions on how to deal with it.<\/p>\n

The good news is that the revision of ISO 9001 is not a revolution, but rather a further evolution of the existing standard.<\/p>\n

Customer focus, process orientation, continual improvement, and risk-based thinking will continue to form the foundation of an effective Quality Management System. At the same time, the new revision addresses current developments and refines existing requirements where the business environment has changed significantly over recent years.<\/p>\n

Why is ISO 9001 being revised?<\/h2>\n

ISO management system standards are reviewed on a regular basis, <\/span><\/span>typically every 7 to 10 years,<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and updated where necessary to reflect new economic, technological, and societal developments. The objective is to ensure that the standard continues to meet the needs of organizations worldwide.<\/p>\n

Since the last major revision in 2015, however, the business environment has changed fundamentally. Rapid digitalization, new technologies, increasingly complex supply chains, geopolitical uncertainties, and growing expectations regarding sustainability and resilience present organizations with challenges that played a much smaller role just ten years ago.<\/p>\n

In short: The revision is intended to make ISO 9001 not more complicated, but more relevant and more practical.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The key changes in ISO 9001:2026<\/h2>\n

1. ISO 9001:2026 Separates risks and opportunities<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

ISO\u00a09001:2015<\/span><\/span><\/a> already introduced the concept of risk-based thinking. In practice, however, many organizations focused almost exclusively on risks, while opportunities were often only mentioned briefly or not assessed systematically at all.<\/p>\n

With ISO 9001:2026, these two topics will now be clearly separated. Actions to address risks and actions to pursue opportunities will each have their own dedicated subclauses within the standard. This highlights that Quality Management is not only intended to prevent problems, but also to help organizations identify and actively leverage opportunities for improvement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Practical Example: supply chain risk analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n

A manufacturer of electronic assemblies realizes that it depends on a single supplier for a critical component.<\/p>\n

The risk:<\/strong> If this supplier is affected by geopolitical developments, financial difficulties, or other disruptive events, the company’s own production could come to a standstill.<\/p>\n

The opportunity:<\/strong> As part of the risk assessment, the company decides to qualify a second supplier. This not only improves supply security, but also strengthens its negotiating position and can optimize lead times and procurement costs over the long term.<\/p>\n

Risks and opportunities are often two sides of the same coin. Organizations that systematically analyse risks, frequently discover opportunities for improvement at the same time. This balanced approach is exactly what ISO 9001:2026 aims to encourage.<\/p>\n

2. Climate change becomes an integral part of quality management<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The 2024 amendment to ISO 9001 already required organizations to consider climate change<\/strong> within the context of the organization. This amendment will now be fully incorporated into ISO 9001:2026.<\/p>\n

This does not mean that organizations will suddenly be required to produce extensive sustainability reports or establish new environmental management processes.<\/p>\n
