About IEC 61508
The international series of standards provides general procedures for all activities of the safety life cycle for systems. The aim is to develop systems consisting of electrical and/or electronic and/or programmable electronic (E/E/PE) elements in such a way that there are no disproportionate or unacceptable hazards to the user and the environment.
IEC 61508 is a basic standard and is used as the basis for application-specific standards in a wide range of industries.
Reference IEC 61508 to ISO 26262
ISO 26262 has evolved from the IEC 61508 series of standards and defines the main procedures for electrical/electronic systems in the automotive industry.
While the IEC 61508 series of standards consists of 7 parts and is used in various industries, ISO 26262 comprises 12 parts and is used exclusively for road vehicles.
What is central to both standards, however, is the focus on safety analyses and the required work products. The safety analyses focus on Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Failure Mode and Effects Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
